As the Twig is Bent

Have you ever heard the phrase, "as the twig is bent, so grows the tree"?

It's a phrase that's frequently used by pediatric chiropractors like myself because it does an amazing job at helping parents visualize how problems can affect their kids as they grow especially when it comes to the spine.

I have a little story to tell about this phrase to put it into perspective. But before I go into the story, let's think about the phrase.

Observe my photo at the top of this blog post. This tree is so big and the branches are so heavy that they are sitting on the ground.

When these branches were just twigs they sprouted out in all directions from the sides of the trunk of the tree. As they grew and became heavier, they bent even more growing in the direction of the tension placed upon them by both external and internal factors.

So whichever way the twig was bent, the branch grew in that direction. Most trees grow upwards, towards the sky. But abnormalities can cause them to grow in different directions just like this old tree.

Now to my story...

Mila's Scoliosis Story

Mila's mother has given me permission to share her story with you.

Mila is an active 12 year old girl. As a matter of fact, she began dancing at the age of 3. She started with ballet and then soon introduced tap, jazz, lyrical, and modern dance classes. She has been dancing ever since.

When she was growing up, she experienced growing pains just like many kids do. While growing pains can be common, they are not normal. Think about this in relation to my description of the growth of the tree in the picture above. This was an early warning sign that something was going on in the skeleton of this young girl.

She was also a belly sleeper. As you know, sleeping on your belly causes you to have to turn your head to one side so you can breathe. We're not meant to be belly sleepers and we're not meant to have our heads turned for hours upon hours at night. Think of what this can do to your spine.

In June 2022, Mila's mother took her in to her family doctor for her annual check-up. It was at this appointment that they did the forward bending test that checks for abnormal growing patterns in the spine. You might know this as the scoliosis screening test.

Mila did in fact have an abnormal hump in her back that the doctor noticed at this appointment. She was referred to an orthopedic doctor who took x-rays and dignosed her with scoliosis. Her curves ranged from 18 to 22 degrees (these are measurements at points in the spine where the curves are formed).

A follow-up appointment was scheduled for 3 months out and she was referred to physical therapy for treatment.

Mila's mom first took her to the chiropractor and continued monthly visits for the next 3 months. (Yay mom! She knows chiropractors are spine experts.) PT treatments were also started.

In October 2022, Mila's follow-up visit with the orthopedic doctor didn't go as well as her mom would have hoped. Mila's scoliosis had worsened from 18/22 degrees to 22/24 degrees . At this point, a brace was ordered for her to wear at night.

Mila's mom had been in some of my intro to homeopathy classes and immediately contacted me to work with her daughter using homeopathic care.

We immediately started the Banerji Protocol of Symphytum officinale 200c and Calcarea phosphorica 3x along with some additional remedy choices for other aspects of this case. I also suggested that Mila see a chiropractor well versed in scoliosis and that visits be increased to multiple visits per week rather than the one time a month visits she was previously doing.

You see, when we're trying to build muscle, or lose weight, or rehab an injury, we don't do our exercises, treatments, or eat good one time a month. Doing these things multiple times a week are the only way you're going to see positive changes. That's why I recommended that her chiropractic visits be increased.

My suggestions and the suggestions of her orthopedic doctor, physical therapist, and chiropractor were followed rigorously.

At Mila's January 2023 follow-up with her orthopedic doctor, her x-rays showed her curvature had normalized. BUT, this x-ray was taken with her brace ON. The doctor recommended a follow-up x-ray in 5 months to check the curvature WITHOUT the brace.

Physical therapy and chiropractic care were reduced to twice a month and once a week respectively. The Banerji Protocol was continued.

In June 2023, Mila had her follow-up x-ray without the brace. Her and her mother were ecstatic that her x-rays showed her curves were ranging from 9 to 14 degrees. This means her curves have been reduced by almost HALF in just one year.

Mila's mom states:

I truly believe that the homeopathic medicine along with the physical therapy, chiropractor, and the brace at night worked harmoniously together to get these results for Mila. I don't believe just the PT or chiropractor would give her these results. The homeopathic medicine has been truly a Godsend for my daughter.

Mila is scheduled to have another follow-up x-ray in the months to come, and I look forward to seeing her progress. I expect that it will be even better news.

If you have a child with scoliosis, consider booking a consult with me so that we can dig into his/her case and make sure the homeopathic remedies and other methods of treatment are right for him/her.
