Most people these days spend plenty of time (maybe even too much time) on the computer. A lot of employers even require you to be proficient in computer skills in order to be hired. And who doesn't go home after a long day at work and spend more time on the computer (or their mobile device)?
As a chiropractor, I know that most people don't have the best posture while sitting at the computer or using their handheld devices. The shoulders rotate inward so the hands can reach the keyboard or hold their phone. The upper back becomes hunched because the head slides forward to gaze at the screen. And when working at a desk, the wrists lay flat on the desk or keyboard while typing.
These postural distortions create a perfect storm for spinal and extremity dysfunction leading to neurological issues. And one of the biggest neurological issues that stems from repetitive technology use is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is medically defined as a neuropathy of the hand when the median nerve is compressed as it goes through the carpal tunnel. This compression can lead to pain, numbness, tingling, and even atrophy (or wasting) of the muscles of the hand.
If it's true Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, the pain and/or numbness will be localized to the palm on the thumb side of the hand, the thumb, and the index and middle fingers. It may also affect the half of the ring finger that's closest to the middle finger. The median nerve only supplies innervation to those particular areas.
And this is exactly what Cathy was experiencing when she contacted me for a consult. But more on that in a minute.
If other areas of the hands and fingers are involved, then it may be a neurological issue further up the line. For example, there may be nerve compression in the elbow, shoulder, or neck rather than just at the carpal tunnel in the wrist. Nerves from these areas also innervate portions of the hand that are not innervated by the median nerve.
Now back to Cathy.
As I mentioned, she was experiencing classic Carpal Tunnel Syndrome complaints when she reached out to me. But she was also experiencing other more pressing concerns with her health as well.
In practical homeopathy, we tend to go with a Banerji Protocol first (if we have one) for any particular condition. In this case, I could have recommended Symphytum 200c mixed with Hypericum 200c taken twice a day for Cathy's Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
But knowing that the carpal tunnel complaints weren't high on her priority list and weren't affecting her life as severely as some of her other complaints, I had to take that into consideration as I made my recommendations.
Instead, I chose to recommend that Cathy take Causticum 30c twice a day. Causticum is another great homeopathic medicine for the symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome AND it hit the nail on the head for some of the additional complaints she was having.
After just two months, the weakness in her hands was much better as were some of the other complaints for which I initially chose this medicine. However, the numbness still remained.
At this point, I recommended that she continue the Causticum and add in Hypericum 200c twice a day. Hypericum is a major nerve medicine especially for numbness and tingling. This is likely why the Banerji's use it in their protocol for this condition.
After another two months, Cathy said that her carpal tunnel symptoms were 90% improved.
How beautiful is that? She gained 90% improvement in just 4 months using homeopathy.
When causticum resolved the other complaints and stopped moving the needle on the remaining carpal tunnel symptoms, we did end up stopping that medicine and added in the Symphytum. This helped to resolve the remaining numbness in Cathy's hands.
Could we have started with the Banerji Protocol and had success? Likely, yes! But as I said, there were other conditions that also had to be taken into account when putting her recommendations together. It's better to address more conditions with fewer medicines than to use many medicines for every single condition.
Not only would I recommend homeopathy for this condition, but anyone suffering with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome should also have a good chiropractor on their healthcare team. Adjustments to the spine and/or extremities can be of great help in fixing postural distortions and getting the nervous system back on track.
And don't forget to be cognizant of your posture at work and home. After all, it's what likely got you here in the first place.
Who do you know that has been struggling with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and might think their only method of treatment is to have surgery?

As always, if you choose to use the remedies I've recommended above and don't seem to be having the same success, just know that there are many different homeopathic medicines that could be right for your situation. Please reach out for a consult with me so that we can find the one that gets you moving in the right direction.
