People are all too quick these days to give the label "cry baby" to any aged child who might be crying for no apparent reason...at least to them anyway. But babies, children, and even adults don't just cry for no reason.
Whether the person is in pain, they've been told "no", they're being bullied, or maybe they're grieving, there's a reason for the tears. In this post, I want to explore some of the reasons a baby might cry and how homeopathy could be of help in each situation.
Have you ever experienced an earache or ear infection? They're quite painful.
Now imagine a little one with an earache. The only way they can convey their pain to you is by crying. You may also see them pulling or tugging at the ear. Or they may also have a fever. But one thing you know for sure is that they are crying because they're in pain.
Homeopathically we can use their symptoms to guide us to using a remedy that will provide some relief and allow their body to battle the illness.
For example, Belladonna 30c, can be used if the baby has a raging fever and a red face alongside the earache or infection. Or I might instead suggest using Hepar sulphuris calcareum 30c if it's a diagnosed ear infection and there's a discharge of pus from the ear.
There are more remedies that could be useful, so head on over to my blog post titled 12 Natural Remedies for Ear Infections if you want to know more.
Babies cry (and slobber) a lot when they're teething. And rightly so. The process of cutting teeth involves inflammation and sensitivity to the tissues of the mouth.
One of the best homeopathic remedies for a crying baby who is teething is Chamomilla 30c. Teething babies tend to be very irritable and inconsolable. They may seem as if the pain is just too over the top. And these are the exact symptoms that guide us to choosing Chamomilla.
If you are concerned about giving your baby a homeopathic remedy in the form of a pellet, Boiron also makes Camilia which is a great liquid option. It's a combination product that contains a few different remedies, including Chamomilla.
Colic is defined by the medical profession as excessive crying in a baby for no apparent reason. They label a baby as having colic if it cries for longer than 3 hours, more than 3 days per week, for at least 3 weeks.
Hmmm...not sure that I agree that a baby cries "for no apparent reason." There's always a reason...allergy to formula or food mom is eating if breastfeeding, gut imbalance from drugs given during or after birth, excessive gas build up in the intestines, constipation, and more.
So what can be done?
Again, we're going to use the symptoms to guide our remedy choice. If baby is just crying excessively and you feel like there are no other symptoms associated with the crying, Chamomilla 30c could be a good choice. If baby is not pooping and is pulling their legs up during crying, then Colocynthis 30c might be a great choice. Personally, I like to use the Banerji Protocol of Nux vomica 30c and Colocynthis 200c instead of Colocynthis by itself. You can alternated these two remedies every 15 minutes until the baby gets relief. And be sure to stop once improvement is made.
It's not a bad thing that babies need to be held. They feel safe and comforted by their parents when held. So if they're crying to be picked up, pick them up. It's as simple as that.
But if this is something that's constant all day every day, there's probably something going on. But if you don't know what it is, don't worry. Just use the symptoms.
Constant crying, wanting to be held, and acting very clingy points us to the remedy Pulsatilla. You can use it in a 30c a few times over the course of a few hours and it might just help put them at ease.
Sometimes babies cry because they're overly tired. I hear all the time "my baby fights going to sleep but I know they're tired."
Well, just like you, there are times when babies are restless and overstimulated and can't quite get to sleep well. This may be a case for Coffea cruda 200c.
If you think of someone who drinks coffee, they typically drink it to wake up or stimulate their brain. And in homeopathy, you know that we use similar substances to help similar pathology. So if coffee wakes someone up and stimulates them, then using coffee in a highly diluted form like we do in homeopathy can help to calm someone with an overstimulated mind and allow them to go to sleep.
Homeopathy is truly a gentle and beautiful healing modality, so I hope you find some of this information useful.
Of course, there are many other reasons why babies might cry, from hunger to needing a diaper change. But I wanted to show you how homeopathy can help calm situations when you're looking for SOMETHING to help in those moments when the crying seems to be out of the norm.
As always, please share this article with any friends or family that might benefit from reading it.
