Have you ever experienced this scenario?

Your teen daughter randomly starts complaining that she's having moments of feeling lightheaded. You chalk it up to how busy and active she is and proceed to tell her to make sure she's eating more nutritious foods and drinking more water.

She takes your advice, yet this lightheadedness continues to occur. Now you're also noticing that she's becoming more tired and weak, and there are even days where she looks a little more pale than usual.

Something's definitely not right. So you figure it's time to take her to the doctor to see what's going on.

After some bloodwork and further evaluation by the doctor, he rules out anything super serious. But you do leave with a diagnosis: anemia. He also suggested that your daughter start on an iron supplement.

On the way home, you begin going over conversations in your head from past discussions you've had with your daughter about her period and how irregular and heavy it is. So you're pretty sure you know exactly how this happened.

If you've been in this scenario, you're not alone. It's a very common issue in teens that I come across frequently in practice.

And it's also a fairly simple issue to begin treating on your own. Here are some things you can do:

  • Encourage a healthy diet - Consumption of junk foods and highly-processed foods can affect nutrient absorption by the gut. Not only does this contribute to anemia, but it can affect a teen's periods as well. Increase iron rich foods like liver and leafy greens.
  • Consider a short term iron supplement - While I don't advocate for using individual nutritional supplements on a long term basis, you may consider having your teen take an iron supplement for a short period of time to help quickly get out of this anemic state. All iron supplements are not created equal, and many are notorious for causing constipation. MegaFoods Blood Builder is one of the only iron supplements that I recommend because I've used it and can vouch for it's effectiveness myself.
  • Use homeopathy - A homeopathic combination that has never failed me in practice is Ferrum phos 3x mixed with Kali mur 3x. These are cells salts that help your body absorb and utilize nutrients properly. Give this combination a couple times a day and anemia will be a thing of the past. I also suggest using this combination during the heavy days of a teen's period.

These are a few easy things you can incorporate quickly to bring healing and relief for your daughter. I have used these methods both personally and professionally with much success and wanted to share them here as a reference for you and others.

If you find that you're not noticing change with these methods after a few weeks, contact me for an individual health consult. There are many ways to address anemia, and while these are the easiest to implement, you may need to work with someone 1:1 for addtional help to bring lasting and effective change.

As always, I'd love to hear from you if you use one or more of these methods and what results you noticed. And please share this info with other family and friends who might need it.
