One minute everything is normal. The next, you or your child is covered in raised, red, itchy welts.
Your mind starts racing. What food caused this? What was touched? Do we need to go to urgent care?
If you’ve ever been in that moment, you know how fast panic can set in.
Hives show up quickly with no warning. And all we know is that it's an allergic reaction. But what can we do?
Most people immediately think BENADRYL!!
But as with all other pharmaceutical drugs, there are homeopathic equivalents: Apis, Rhus tox, Urtica urens, Histaminum, Nat mur, and many more. But which one do we use?
Hives are the body's way of expressing that something has triggered a response in the system. Sometimes it's an obvious trigger, and sometimes it’s not. In both cases, the skin is giving you important information that will help you choose the right remedy or remedies.
Let me show you what I mean.
When the Trigger is Clear
I once experienced a sudden outbreak of hives the day we arrived at a campground in Pennsylvania.
After dinner, my husband and I went out for a walk as it was starting to get dark. I have a history of getting fever blisters, so when I felt my bottom right lip starting to swell, I assumed that’s what was happening.
But then my face started getting hot.
I remember telling him, “My face feels like it’s on fire!”
At the same time, I was becoming incredibly itchy.
By the time we made it back to the RV, I asked my kids to turn on all the lights and check me for ticks before I did anything else. After all, we were in Pennsylvania.
Instead, they looked at me and asked, “What’s wrong with your face?”
Hives.
That’s what was wrong with my face. Something I had never experienced before.
I shared photos with some of my homeopathic colleagues, and one who lived in the area told me the city had been aerial spraying for flies that day.
Suddenly, it all made sense. That burning, fiery sensation on my face was from my skin being exposed to pesticides… aka poison.
Connecting the symptoms to the exposure gave me information to choose the remedies Apis mellifica (for hives that are edematous, burning, and stinging) and Arsenicum album (for ailments from toxic chemicals and itching with burning). I used them both in a 30c potency alternating them every 5 minutes at the beginning.
By the second dose of each remedy, I could tell that they were working...not done, not healed, but improving. I was able to reduce the frequency of the remedies at that point.
By the seventh dose of each remedy, I was 95% better. At this point I stopped the remedies and allowed my body to complete the work.
When There is No Obvious Cause
Now compare that to what happened with my son. On two separate occasions, he developed hives seemingly out of nowhere.
No new foods. No environmental changes. No clear trigger.
So instead of focusing on finding a cause, I shifted to observing his specific symptoms.
The hives were edematous, red, itchy, and all over his body. His behavior was normal. And there were no other real symptoms to go on.
Based on that picture, I chose the remedies Apis (for edematous, itchy hives), Histaminum (our homeopathic version of Benadryl), and Urtica urens (for raised red, itchy blotches on the skin). I choose 6c potencies and alternated these three remedies every 10 minutes or so.
Again, the hives resolved in short order.
Why This Matters
These two experiences highlight something important. In conventional care, symptoms are often grouped into one category with a standard response. But in homeopathy, we look at the individual expression of those symptoms to choose the best remedy.
The same diagnosis can come from different triggers or present with slight variations on symptoms. This is why the approach to supporting the body can look different each time.
So if you or your child develops hives, be sure to:
observe the appearance of the hives
consider possible triggers (foods, exposures, illness, stress)
note any sensations (itchy, burning, better from cool air or worse from heat)
weigh behavior and energy levels
All of this information matters more than you might think.
And while I always share this information and these stories so that you can become knowledgeable and confident in using homeopathy, don't ever hesitate to seek medical attention if you're seeing signs of anaphylaxis.
Hives can feel random and alarming. But the body is doing its job by sending out an SOS signal that it needs assistance. With the right approach, you can support it in resolving the response.
If you or your child repetitively gets hives, you don’t have to stay stuck in that cycle. Recurring hives are often a sign that the body is asking for deeper support. Just reach out to work with me so we can look beyond symptom management and find the right homeopathic support for lasting healing.
