As parents, we never want to see our babies suffer. And RSV in an infant, if it progresses to the more severe stage, can be flat out horrific to see.
RSV is a virus. Most of the time it begins as a basic cold with a runny nose and cough. You may also notice that your baby just doesn't feel well. And as far as older children are concerned, this is all that may occur.
However for babies, it can progress into much more severe symptoms. Your baby may be more irritable and not want to eat or drink. And you might even see your baby start to struggle with breathing which may turn their mouth and lips blue.
This can break a parent's heart and can have even the most holistic thinking parents racing their baby to the ER.
So what's the solution in the ER? Medications such as anti-virals, bronchodilators, fever reducers (if the child has a fever), oxygen, and general monitoring.
But did you know that like most other viral illnesses, they just have to run their course? Pediatricians even recommend at home treatment as the best course of treatment for RSV.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying if your baby is turning blue that you should just stay at home, especially if you don't know of other options to treat your baby. But I AM saying that when armed with knowledge, you can make great choices to help your child through an illness like this even in the more severe stages.
So let me tell you about baby Emma.
Emma was just 3 months old when her mom took her into the hospital for labored breathing, fever, and a cough that was so hard it would turn her face red. Emma was diagnosed with RSV.
Emma's mom had recently been studying homeopathy, but didn't exactly know how to help her baby in this situation, so she contacted me.
In speaking with Emma's mom, I found that there were a variety of symptoms she was dealing with. She had a cough that was very wet and you could hear the mucus rattle in her chest as she would breathe. That mucus was just so tough for little Emma to get out that it would make her gag until her face turned red and she could spit it up.
So after diving deeper into her case, I recommended two specific homeopathic medicines: Antimonium tartarticum and Ipecacuanha.
For RSV, I like to have parents with infants use Ant tart 9c and Ipecac 6c, but Emma's mom did not have easy access to these potencies. She DID have both of these medicines in a 30c potency, however, so she proceeded with those medicines while she ordered the others.
Within 24 hours, little Emma was doing so much better and headed home from the hospital.
Could her progress have been due to the medications the hospital was giving her and not the homeopathy? Possibly. But let's fast forward a couple of weeks.
I was contacted by Emma's mom a second time. She was once again struggling with almost the exact same symptoms as before. But this time, instead of running to the hospital right away, mom asked if she could use the same homeopathic medicines as before.
Yes! Great thinking, mom!
This time Emma's mom had the correct potencies on hand and started them up right after we talked. Within a week, Emma's horrible cough was so much better and she wasn't struggling to breathe.
There was no need to go to the hospital a second time and be given the same suppressive pharmaceutical medications because Emma's mom was well equipped to care for her baby herself with a more natural and more healing medicine that is just as effective.
So even in some of the toughest situations, it pays to be prepared. Consider joining one of my intro to homeopathy classes so that you can have the knowledge and confidence to care for your littles ones like Emma's mom did.
